Game of Thrones finale is Sky's most-watched entertainment programme ever

Game of Thrones' season five finale has become Sky's most-watched entertainment programme of all time.

The episode brought in a total audience of 3.1 million on all platforms, including the 2am simulcast and 9pm evening airing on Sky Atlantic, as well as those watching on Sky+ and on-demand across the following week.

The figures will be even higher when taking streaming services Sky Go and NOW TV into account.

Game of Thrones was up 42% in total from the previous series, and helped Sky Atlantic increase its viewing-share in Sky homes by 20%.

Sky's Managing Director of Content Gary Davey said of the figures: "We know our customers love being able to choose how, where and when they watch their favourite show – whether that's staying up until 2am for the global simulcast or re-watching every episode from the very beginning – and we're thrilled to offer them that flexibility.

"Re-defining the meaning of 'must-see TV', we're proud to be a part of the Game of Thrones phenomenon. In the aftermath of a record-breaking end to the fifth season on Sky, we can't wait to see what will happen next."

Meanwhile, the list of directors for the HBO fantasy series' sixth season has been released. These include a Thrones newcomer in Lost's Jack Bender, while Miguel Sapochnik - who worked on last season's 'Hardhome' which included a 30-minute battle sequence - is directing the final two episodes.

Game of Thrones returns next year on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
