Sky’s Now TV launches on PlayStation 3

BSkyB’s OTT service Now TV is now available on the Sony PlayStation 3 games console. Now TV offers access to a range of content including Sky Movies and all six Sky Sports channels with no contract. Sky recently introduced a £9.99 (€11.70) Sky Sports Day pass which lets customers watch sports content on a pay-as-you-go basis.

4G Network roll out begins across London

Mobile phone operators are now preparing to start rolling out 4G networks across London to provide super-fast wireless broadband in the coming weeks and months.

 

at800 are sending postcards to households and businesses across sixty-five council areas, in London and areas bordered by the M25, telling them about the mast activation.

 

Viewers are being advised that there is a small chance that they may experience some disruption to television reception when masts go live. However, in those few cases, it can be resolved by fitting an individual or communal filter, which will be provided for free by at800.

Youview nears 400k users: 'Xbox One, consoles not an immediate threat'

Youview has announced that it is close to reaching 400,000 homes across the UK, while dismissing the immediate threat of the Xbox One and other connected consoles.

 

The subscription-free TV service, which launched eight months ago, also revealed that it receives over 2.2 million video on demand (VOD) plays each week.

 

YouView CEO Richard Halton said: "We've had a great start and we're delighted to have received such a positive response from consumers.

 

"We're already the fastest-growing TV service in the UK and now we can see that translating into viewing.

Sky to add Channel 4's 4oD and More4 HD channel

Sky customers who have connected their Sky+HD box to broadband will be able to catch up on shows from Channel 4's portfolio of networks, including Channel 4, E4 and More 4.

 

Programming from the Channel 4 archive, such as The Inbetweeners, Shameless, Spaced, Father Ted, The IT Crowd and This Is England '88, will also be available on Sky On Demand.

at800 to send 28,000 filters to households in west London for next phase of 4G testing

at800 is holding a further test to help understand the extent to which 4G at 800 MHz may disrupt Freeview. Approximately 28,000 households in Brentford and Isleworth will be sent a free at800 filter ahead of the test, which begins on 29 April. at800 is the organisation tasked with ensuring viewers continue to receive Freeview when 4G mobile services at 800 MHz are launched later this year*.

 

The at800 filter is designed to block 4G at 800 MHz. Most people will be able to fit the filter themselves, though support is available for eligible viewers.** Only new 4G services at 800 MHz coming later this year could cause problems with Freeview. Existing 4G from EE operates at 1800 MHz and cannot disrupt television.

BSkyB chief looks to give sustainable values a creative edge

BSkyB CEO Jeremy Darroch has acknowledged that while the broadcast industry has been slow in waking up to corporate sustainability, on a strategic level it has proved beneficial for his company.

 

During an interview hosted by Green Mondays last week with environmental journalist Lucy Siegle, Darroch spoke at length about the CSR drivers within BskyB and his own role in terms of leading on such issues.

Tesco Clubcard TV signs BBC Worldwide deal

Tesco has signed a deal with BBC Worldwide to show various cookery, comedy and drama programmes on its ad-supported Clubcard TV service.

 

Shows covered by the deal include Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Goodness Gracious Me, Stig of the Dump, The Secret Garden and cookery programmes featuring Antonio Carluccio, Ken Hom and Gary Rhodes.

Sky Movies Disney Channel to launch  on Sky in March

Sky Movies Disney marks the first time that The Walt Disney Channel has been involved in a co-branded linear movies channel anywhere in the world.

 

The channel's launch is also the latest initiative in Sky's strategy of dedicating entire channels to a certain genre or brand, following the debut of Formula One network Sky Sports F1, and Bond films channel Sky Movies 007 last year.

 

New Disney movies will be available on Sky Movies Disney around six months after they have ended their cinema run, and will then be exclusive to Sky Movies subscribers for at least a year.

Sky launches Awesome Foursome broadband and TV deal

Sky has revamped its broadband and TV deals to combine four of its most popular services.

 

As part of the Awesome Foursome deal, customers can receive Sky+, Sky TV, Sky Go and Sky Broadband, as well as calls, for £21.50 a month.

Those who sign up to this option on a 12-month contract receive up to 14Mb broadband and unlimited downloads with no usage limits or slowdown enforced by the broadband provider, even at peak times.

Sky Sports has been awarded more Premier League rights, cementing its position as the home of the Premier League and confirming the 2013/14 season as the biggest ever for Sky Sports.

 

The three-year agreement means that each season, Sky Sports viewers can enjoy extended highlights of all 226 Premier League matches not shown live on television, plus goals and key moments for other programming such as Sky Sports News HDand magazine shows including Goals on Sunday and Soccer Saturday.

This service lets you download Sky films and TV shows to your mobile device of choice, and watch them later on, offline, with no need for a 3G or Wi-Fi connection as normal streaming with Sky Go requires.

Freeview strikes deal with RDI

UK digital-terrestrial platform Freeview and the Registered Digital Institute (RDI) have struck a new working partnership agreement that allows RDI-approved installers and engineers to use the Freeview logo.

 

The partnership, which includes a trademark licensing agreement, has been developed so that RDI members can benefit from cross-promotional and marketing opportunities through asset sharing, such as logos and brand association.

STV awarded Glasgow and Edinburgh local TV licences

 New local TV licences have been awarded to provide evening broadcasting for Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Both of them are going to STV, which already runs the main Channel 3 service for most of Scotland.

The new Freeview channels are to be known as ETV in Edinburgh and GTV in Glasgow.

Users of the Sky Sports app on the iPad can from today access the same analysis  tools during football matches as used by Gary Neville and Ed Chamberlain on Ford  Monday Night Football.

 

For the first time, viewers watching live  coverage of Premier League games can get additional real-time information on  matches, teams, tactics and players on the app.

BBC launches free sport app

UK public broadcaster the BBC has launched a free sport app for iPhone and iPod touch devices. The app allows users to keep abreast of the BBC’s coverage of numerous sports and sporting events.

 

A football-specific section has a league-by-league overview of the latest scores and goal scorers at a glance, with dedicated match pages for more in-depth information, bringing together starting line-ups, match stats, live text commentary and the post-game report.

Selected video highlights will also be available on-demand.
