Campbell & Kennedy selected as one of three companies by at800 to resolve disruption to Freeview from 4G at 800 MHz

In July last year, Campbell & Kennedy (C&K) reported that it had been officially appointed by at800 as one of a number of contractors fully trained to resolve any Freeview problems that occurred due to the 4G roll-out. The company has now been appointed as just one of three companies that at800 are taking forward to assist with any 4G issues and will cover Scotland and Northern Ireland.

 

Both 4G mobile services and digital TV use bands of frequencies. The 800 MHz frequencies used by some 4G services are next to the frequencies used for Freeview. TVs and set-top boxes that receive Freeview may have the TV service blocked by these 4G signals; there is a very small chance this may cause disruption to a viewer’s Freeview service.

at800 is an independent organisation created to ensure that all UK viewers continue to receive Freeview when 4G at 800 MHz is activated in their area. at800 is funded by and represents the UK mobile operators licensed to offer 4G mobile services at 800 MHz: EE, Telefónica UK (O2), Three and Vodafone. Its total budget of £180 million is to run the mitigation scheme until one year after 98% of the UK population can receive 4G at 800 MHz.


If a viewer calls at800, it will assess whether the disruption might be due to 4G at 800 MHz. If so, it will arrange for an at800-accredited installer to visit the viewer’s home. C&K’s fully trained engineers will provide solutions to any households affected by 4G interference in Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as communal TV systems on behalf of property managers. If 4G at 800 MHz is diagnosed as the cause of any disruption, C&K will fit an at800-approved filter to the TV system. This blocks 4G signals and enables viewers to continue receiving and watching Freeview as normal. If further work is required, C&K engineers are also fully trained to assess what is required and deliver it quickly and effectively.


C&K, who are also one of Sky’s main contractors, has been delivering TV and aerial installation services for 60 years and so has the experience and infrastructure to manage this contract.
