Game of Thrones finale is Sky's most-watched entertainment programme ever

Game of Thrones' season five finale has become Sky's most-watched entertainment programme of all time.

The episode brought in a total audience of 3.1 million on all platforms, including the 2am simulcast and 9pm evening airing on Sky Atlantic, as well as those watching on Sky+ and on-demand across the following week.

 

The figures will be even higher when taking streaming services Sky Go and NOW TV into account.

Sky and TalkTalk launch UFO website to promote fibre broadband in York

Sky and TalkTalk have launched a new website to promote their new fibre broadband network in York.

 

The site says ‘UltraFibreOptic’ – or UFO – has landed and allows users to register their interest in ultrafast broadband.

 

Sky and TalkTalk are working with infrastructure provider CityFibre to build a broadband network in York capable of speeds up to 1,000Mbps.

Sky TV packages to keep Comedy Central and MTV after Viacom deal

Sky customers will continue to be able to watch channels including Comedy Central and MTV after the provider struck a new deal with the channels’ owners.

 

The commercial partnership between Sky and Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has been extended for a further five years.

 

It means Viacom’s popular pay TV channels – including Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and VH1 – will continue to be available in all Sky homes.

Sky Arts to be relaunched as single TV channel plus on demand content

Sky has announced more changes to its channel lineup, consolidating its two arts channels into a single ‘super channel’.


The company is merging Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts 2, combining content from both channels in a change that will see it moved higher up the broadcaster’s Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).


As part of the revamp, set to take place from 9 June, Sky is also launching a comprehensive Sky Arts on demand service with more than 1,000 hours of dedicated arts programming.

Sky attracts highest number of new customers for 11 years

Sky has announced its biggest growth in customer numbers in 11 years, with more than 242,000 new subscribers joining the broadband, TV and landline provider.

 

The figures, covering the nine months until the end of March 2015 and published today, show a 70% year-on-year increase in new customers.

Sky Announces Set Top Box Eco-mode Amongst Updates

Sky has announced a raft of updates to their Sky+ set top box operating system, including an energy saving 'eco-mode'.

 

The nifty updates include improvements to the Planner to simplify navigation and make it more intuitive. The most recent recordings and downloads are even easier to find; now at the top of the first page, previously they were at the end of the Planner.

Government to subsidise satellite broadband for rural residents

The government is to subsidise the cost of installing satellite broadband in the country's hardest-to-reach areas.

 

People living in areas not covered by the rollout of superfast fibre broadband will be given help to install a superfast-capable satellite service, the government has said.


The new scheme, to be launched later this year, will subsidise the cost of installation and equipment, with customers paying for a monthly subscription themselves.

Sky Restart will allow customers to go back to the start of a movie

Sky has announced that its Restart feature is coming to the UK later this year.

 

The service, which allows customers to jump back to the start of a movie broadcast that has already begun, has been available in Italy for some time.

 

"One of the most popular features among our Italian customers is called 'Restart'. It's a simple but very clever idea that allows customers to go back to the start of a movie," Sky CEO Jeremy Darroch told a press conference.

Sky Sports to show MLS live as broadcasters win TV rights to show Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard

British football fans will still be able to watch Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard when they head to America after Sky Sports won the exclusive rights to broadcast live Major League Soccer from the start of this season.

 

Sky have signed a four-year deal to show exclusively live games from the MLS from March when the season kicks off.

 

Former England internationals Gerrard and Lampard join the league in July once they have finished playing in the Premier League.

Freeview launches new connected TV service and fresh rebrand

Freeview has announced plans for a new connected television service which will launch later this year.

It has also undergone its biggest rebrand since launching in 2002, while the logo has been given a fresh and updated look to reflect the platform's evolving service.


Freeview Play will launch later this year and will provide viewers with the option to watch live, catch-up and on-demand television.

Sky has announced that it's launching on Snapchat Discover to provide news and sports to millions of young people across the UK and Ireland.

Snapchat Discover is a fresh and creative platform to present news stories on mobile devices.

Each afternoon Sky News and Sky Sports will publish 6-10 'snaps', each using a combination of images, video and text.

Sky Sports wins live Premier League rights to end of 2018-19 season

In a successful outcome to the Premier League’s tender process, Sky Sports was awarded five packs of live rights.

 

The new deal ensures that Sky Sports will be the only place to follow the biggest matches and stories throughout the Premier League season.

 

Viewers will be able to rely on Sky Sports to bring them three times as many live matches as any other broadcaster, including the best match picks and the most-watched slots in the schedule.

Sky Sports win exclusive rights to show The Open Championship from 2017

Sky Sports has been awarded exclusive rights to live television coverage of The Open Championship in a five-year deal from 2017, the R&A has announced.

 

Sky is taking over the rights from the BBC, which has had a 60-year partnership with golf's oldest major.

 

The new deal commences at what will be the 146th Open Championship, being played at Royal Birkdale from July 16-23 2017.

Sky to launch UK mobile phone service

Pay-TV firm Sky is launching a mobile phone service next year in partnership with O2's Spanish parent Telefonica.

Sky will use Telefonica UK's wireless network, enabling the satellite broadcaster to offer mobile voice and data services for the first time.

It takes Sky into the battle for "quad play", adding mobile to its existing services of internet, landline and TV.

Sky Sports extends England cricket deal until 2019

Sky Sports has announced that it will continue showing England cricket matches until 2019.

The channel has extended its contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board, remaining the sole broadcaster of England matches.

The deal includes all England's home Test, one-day and T20 matches, as well as at least 60 days of domestic cricket.Sky will also show a handful of England Lions and women's matches, along with the 2019 World Cup in England.

Sky Atlantic brings Game of Thrones to The O2

Sky Atlantic has confirmed The O2 will host the first leg of the experiential Game of Thrones: The Exhibition's international tour in February.

 

The brand will provide Sky TV customers and their guests with exclusive access to the exhibition set to be held on 9-12 and 15-17 February at the London venue.

 

The experience will showcase approximately 70 original artefacts from the popular fantasy series, as well as select pieces from the upcoming fifth season. It will also feature a new integrated web-based companion and photo stations that will place fans within some of Game of Thrones’ most shocking moments.

Two new gardening series announced for 2015 as Sky TV enters the sector


Sky TV is entering into gardening TV in January, while the BBC is bringing back Great British Garden Revival.

 

Great British Garden Revival's new 10-part series two airs on BBC Two from early January 2015.

 

In each episode, two presenters will focus on an endangered aspect of gardens about which they feel passionately about and offer hands-on, practical advice to viewers on how they can restore and look after their gardens.

Ofcom to move digital TV services from 700MHz spectrum to make way for 4G

Ofcom will open up the 700MHz spectrum band for 4G services to ensure that the UK is able to meet the rising demand for mobile data services. The decision follows a similar plan from the European Commission.

 

The plan means that digital TV services, which currently use the 700MHz band, will have to move again, having already been shifted from the 800MHz band as part of the digital switchover.

 

However, Ofcom claims that the benefits of opening up the 700MHz band to mobile data services far outweigh the work involved.

Sky+ app update lets you view smartphone photos on your TV
skyplus app

An update to the Sky+ mobile app has now made it possible to view the photographs stored on your smartphone or your living room TV, without the need for wires or any other extra equipment.

 

It's one of the features added to the Sky+ app as part of the latest update – all you need to do is connect your smartphone or tablet to the same wi-fi network as your existing Sky+ HD box.

 

A camera icon will appear in the navigation bar of your app and, with a single click, you follow a few steps in order to see your images appear on your TV.
